After completing the small scale miniature city with great success, I knew that this what I was going to create as the final piece of the SEED Brief. Yet, even though the simple cut outs worked well, even with their forced perspective designs, only so many of them can be placed next to each other before the whole ensemble of model buildings, breaks the miniature reality in which I am trying to create.
So, what needs to change. As the original model buildings were only flat cut outs, I immediately knew that the new city was going to have to be made from a mix of some flat models, but a majority of 3D structures, helping to add to the forced perspective of the city.
Why?
When researching into this form as artwork, as it somehow is, specifically the Hades Landscape used in the opening credits of Blade Runner (1982) . The miniature city was laid out using a mixture of 3D structures, which would be at the front of the model so a camera could pass by and show the depth and scale of the city without looking flat. Whilst the remainder of the model was made from brass cut outs, because with the layers of artificial smoke and fog being pumped over it, forcing the cut outs to look further away as the human eye can only see so far before objects begin to blur. And with the help of the the film camera only focusing on what was close to it, the small scale buildings looked even further away.
